Blending Old with New

Many people struggle with hand me downs and family heirlooms. We appreciate these gifts, but they don’t always fit our personal aesthetic. For most of us it is important that our homes reflect our personal taste, and this can be difficult with lots of family heirlooms…

Here are a few tips to blend these cherished items with your personal style…

Art work.
Art work can be reframed so that the frame reflects your personal taste, allowing the artwork to reflect a piece of your history. If you have a modern aesthetic, a gloss white frame can modernize an old piece, if you have a rustic flare a barnwood frame can transition a potentially formal painting to something that fits your style better.

Another idea for artwork is to mix it in with other pieces that you like. Even if the colors may not go, if you add it to more pieces that blend the overall composition with your color scheme, you can successfully blend the piece without having to change your color scheme to suit the artwork.

Furniture
Furniture can be tricky because a large piece can dictate the look of a room. Think about how changing the upholstery can change the look of the piece. A damask can make a casual piece look dressy, or a linen can make a formal piece look casual. Paint or stain color can also transform a piece. Imagine an antique chest. Perhaps it is an elaborate mahogany piece. Imagine how whitewash can transform the look. New knobs are another way to add your personal flair. Anthropologie has an endless array of fun, full of personality options.

Textiles are another treasured item that we may inherit, but can be tricky to blend as they are full of so much color. If you have many throws or quilts from a grandmother that quilts or knits, think about dedicating a bookshelf to all of them. The same can be done with throw pillows. You can mix and match all of them on a sofa or bed. This contains all of them in one spot, so that you can have the rest of the house to decorate how you chose.

Happy New Year! To all of our internet friends! For the first blog of the New Year we would like to share with you some of our favorite fixes for quickly spritzing up the home after taking down all of your holiday decorations.

Number one easiest way to make a room feel fresh and new is a new coat of paint. Maybe even a fun color! Above is a photo of one of our favorite client’s home in Brentwood, TN. They updated the look of the space with a hip shade of turquoise, some patterned curtains and a funky retro brass chandelier for a complete transformation of the room.

Another option, if you prefer shopping over manual labor is to add a rug and some throw pillows! This client’s living room was updated with a fun rug and some throw pillows. It is amazing what a little color can do!

The above photo shows an office where we added some patterned chairs to liven up the space. The overall effect is hip and cool.

This guest bedroom was updated with a soothing paint color and a patterned bedspread and pillows from West Elm.

Congratulations to cke interior design! Carrie England and Kristina Eckert recently won the Toast of Music City Award for the best Interior Decorators for the 3rd time in a row this past week. check out toast of music city!
! Also cke interior design recently went to Atlanta to Market to see lots of great new furniture and accessories there. I got to look through a bunch of their pictures from the weekend and it looks like they made some great finds. Here are a few of my favorites: Love these patterned pillows and ottomans! Great over scaled pattern on this rug! It reminds me of a super comfortable sweater. Love the blue and orange bold shapes! Love this rustic dining room table and the industrial chairs! Emmy Barnett

My name is emmy and I am the lucky new interior design intern at cke interior design in Nashville Tennessee. I have just gotten back from studying abroad in Helsinki Finland, the design capital of the world for 2012, so it is exciting to be back in Nashville and practice interior design with cke interior design as well as use what I learned while living in Finland. Cke interior design is a talented firm that does a lot of local projects in Nashville from restaurants, to houses, to remodeling a kitchen or bathroom. Its great to get to see and help Carrie and Kristina working on interior design projects, and its great to be back in the south.

But there are a lot of great things about Finland I miss and one of those things is their unique design. So I thought I would share some of the things I learned, saw and love now about Finland and Scandinavian design.

Scandinavian design is characterized by simple designs that are minimalistic, functional and often low cost with mass production (like Ikea, its from Sweden!). Scandinavian design often uses wood since there are a lot of trees as well as plastics or pressed steel.

Love the raw wood table and cool plastic chairs!
